After a quiet morning dealing with her regulars and a couple of new patrons, Penny and Fischer jumped into the van and left Holts End to go to Thistle Grange, her stop for the afternoon, and her lunch date with Susie.

It was always a welcome treat meeting her friend at the Pot and Kettle. She was seated in the bay window when she and Fischer arrived. After they’d ordered lunch and a bowl of water for Fischer, they caught up with one another’s news.

“I bumped into Max Damage this morning,” Penny said. “Literally.”

“He’s cruising around the area playing the country gent,” Susie said, rolling her eyes. “What is it about these city types who like to play act at country living? I just don’t get it.”

“He was on his way to the fishing lodge when I saw him.”

Susie had her reporter’s notebook out and was scribbling down information as Penny spoke. “My editor has asked me to keep up with him, but his fans are all over the place trying to catch a glimpse or a photo they can upload to social media and he’s put plans in place to thwart them. Do you know he’s got four cars in the area and he’s jumping from one to another in order to lose them? And he’s got a driver who looks just like him. A doppelgänger. That’s why we’ve had conflicting reports putting him in two places at once.”

“Well, someone needs to stop it all, Susie. We’ve got a lot of elderly residents in these villages. Just imagine if one of them was crossing the road with their wheeled walker, or a wheelie shopping trolley, and a car came careening round the corner. They wouldn’t be able to stop in time. It’s dangerous. They have absolutely no respect for the villages or the countryside. I hope you’ll put this angle in your article as well, Susie?”

“Of course I will. I always try to write a balanced report. You’re right, they are a public menace. But, by the same token, having a celebrity in our midst is bringing in a lot of people who are spending in the local shops and establishments. It’s a double-edged sword.”

“I understand that, but they need to abide by the law. If I’m honest, at the risk of sounding like I’m an old fuddy-duddy, I’d never heard of him before the weekend.”

Susie barked out a laugh. “Using the term fuddy-duddy isn’t doing you any favours in that regard, you know. Actually, I have heard of him, but only recently. It’s not my sort of music. We didn’t grow up on this stuff, Penny. I suppose that’s the difference. Do you know what his real name is?”

“No idea.”

“Maximilian Theodore Cavendish III. How’s that for a mouthful?”

Penny laughed. “Almost as absurd as Max Damage. So, what have you discovered about him?”

“I had a chance to say hello earlier in the week. He was just coming onto Market Street from Knight’s Lane. He wasn’t happy about being stopped. A bit rude, actually.
